It takes its name from Matidia, a Roman noblewoman, belonging to the Antonine dynasty, who had the title of “Augusta”.
She was the niece of the Emperor Trajan and mother-in-law of the Emperor Hadrian. Upon her death in 119 AD, Hadrian gave her funeral oration and deified her.
His statues were present throughout the Empire and coins were minted with his effigy.
A temple was dedicated to her in the Campo Marzio in Rome, which was to correspond to the current church of Santa Maria in Aquiro in Piazza Capranica, a historic place, very dear to the Santarelli family as it was there that their activity as wine merchants began.
GRAPES AND VINIFICATION
Matidia is produced exclusively with Cesanese grapes from a 30-year-old spurred cordon vineyard managed in the Olevano Romano area. Volcanic limestone soil with east exposure at 500 meters above sea level
Harvest in late autumn, around mid-October.
Very long fermentation on the skins, about three weeks, with cold pre-fermentation maceration for 6/7 days at 8° C, followed by alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature with pumping over and punching down. After racking, the refinement takes place partly in steel and partly in tonneaux wood for about 12 months.
ORGANOLEPTIC EXAMINATION
Typical notes of the grape variety with hints of morello cherry and light spiciness; maintains good freshness and intact tannins; on the palate it reveals itself as fine and elegant.
We seek the combination of elegance and longevity.
The ripe fruit notes and excessive fattiness on the palate are not enhanced for this reason. Very savoury and mineral, persistent and deep, with a sure aptitude for aging.

WHO WE ARE
Always for Amatrice
For over 20 years we have been selecting and bringing the best products of our land to the tables of families. After the earthquake of August 24, 2016, we were forced to completely reorganize our business, facing numerous difficulties. Courage, support and love for our city have allowed us to move forward with the same determination as before. Today our shop is located inside the Il Corso Shopping Center, built temporarily to deal with the emergency. At the same time, we have created a new e-commerce to allow many people throughout Italy to purchase our products. We are still here, as we once were, to represent and promote the original gastronomic tradition of Amatrice.
